Scyther’s Path of Solitude

Quick Tips

Make sure Scyther is at least level 70.

Increase Scyther’s Effort Values for Speed, HP, and Attack.

Use a combo of Swords Dance and Close Combat.

Scyther’s Challenge

Scyther goes up against a level 70 Onix in this Path of Solitude challenge.

Onix is a Rock/Ground-type Pokémon. Onix is weak to Water, Grass, Ice, Fighting, Ground, and Steel-type attacks. Additionally, it is resistant to Normal, Fire, Electric, Poison, Flying, and Rock-type attacks. Luckily, Scyther can learn Close Combat, a very powerful fighting-type move, to use against Onix.

Recommendations & Advantages

Using a combination of agile-style Swords Dance, followed by strong-style Close Combat is a valid strategy. Using Swords Dance in an agile-style ensures a fully-maxed Speed EV Scyther can attack 3 times in the same time it takes Onix to attack once.

Another strategy to this challenge would be to use Swords Dance, another agile-style damaging move (such as X-Scissor or Dark Pulse), followed by a strong-style Close Combat. This strategy would not require increasing EVs for Attack so drastically.

Increasing HP EV and maxing out Speed EV will almost always be needed by a near level 70 Scyther in this challenge. If Onix is able to attack first, Scyther will need to endure another round of damage from Stealth Rocks’ effect on it. Increasing HP ensures that damage dealt by Stealth Rock is not enough to KO Scyther over time.

Further recommendations include:

  • Level up Scyther to at least Level 70 in order to match Onix.
    • Unless you are looking for a challenge, you should at least match your opponent’s level.
  • Increase of Effort Values (EVs) for Speed, HP, and Attack.
    • Leveling speed ensures Scyther can attack quickly and will attack before its opponent.
    • If using Swords Dance and Close Combat at level 70, a near-maxed Attack EV will be needed.
    • With Grit items, you can upgrade your Effort Values. A variety of activities can be carried out in order to obtain these items, such as defeating wild Pokémon and releasing captured Pokémon.
    • Effort Values significantly increase stats when reaching an EV level of 1, 4, 7, and 10.
  • Master the moves learned from Zisu.
    • A mastered move can be used in both Agile-style and Strong-style.
