Grotle’s Path of Solitude

Quick Tips

Make sure Grotle is at least level 70.

Increase Grotle’s Effort Values for Speed, Attack, and Special Attack.

Learn and master Earth Power and Bulldoze.

Grotle’s Challenge

Grotle goes up against a level 70 Monferno in this Path of Solitude challenge.

Monferno is a Fire/Fighting-type Pokémon. Monferno is weak to Water, Ground, Psychic, and Flying-type attacks. Additionally, it is resistant to Grass, Steel, Fire, Dark, Bug, and Ice-type attacks. Luckily, Grotle can learn both Ice-type and Poison-type moves from Zisu at the training grounds, giving it an advantage in this challenge.

Recommendations & Advantages

Unlike the challenge for Turtwig and Chimchar, Monferno does not have a Rock-type weakness, meaning Ground-type moves will once again be the most useful. Much like Turtwig, Grotle will learn the ground-type move Bulldoze through leveling. While this move is useful and quick, it will not offer enough damage in this challenge alone. Learning the move Earth Power from Zisu will provide more offensive damage while being a slower attack overall.

Increasing Effort Values for Speed will ensure Grotle can utilize both moves at the beginning of battle. Using an agile-style Bulldoze followed by a strong-style Earth Power will be enough to win. Increasing Attack and Special Attack EVs will allow Bulldoze and Earth Power to deal additional damage if needed.

Further recommendations include:

  • Level up Grotle to at least Level 70 in order to match Monferno.
    • Unless you are looking for a challenge, you should at least match your opponent’s level.
  • Increase of Effort Values (EVs) for Speed, Special Attack, and Attack.
    • Leveling speed ensures Grotle can attack quickly and will attack before its opponent.
    • Increasing Special Attack and Attack will allow it to deal more damage to Monferno.
    • With Grit items, you can upgrade your Effort Values. A variety of activities can be carried out in order to obtain these items, such as defeating wild Pokémon and releasing captured Pokémon.
    • Effort Values significantly increase stats when reaching an EV level of 1, 4, 7, and 10.
  • Master the moves learned from Zisu.
    • A mastered move can be used in both Agile-style and Strong-style.
